Step into a unique piece of New Market history with this charming 720 square foot home, locally known as the “ice house” and “casket store.”

Built in 1920, this intriguing property sits on a convenient corner lot and holds fascinating stories from the community’s past.

The efficient single-level layout includes a living room, kitchen, full bathroom, and bedroom—offering all the essentials for comfortable living. While cozy in size, this home presents endless possibilities for the right buyer. Whether you’re looking for an investment opportunity as a rental property, searching for your first home, or seeking a unique renovation project, this historic property delivers on potential.

This property was owned by the wealth Minnis family of Jefferson County, and was the area’s first commercial mortuary. Consisting of 3 rooms, the front room was the viewing parlor, the middle room was for embalming and the rear room was used for making caskets. The ice house was in the basement of the property, where ice was delivered in larges pieces from an insulated train car and distributed to homes and stores that were fortunate enough to have ice boxes. The building was also at one time used as the New Market Utilities office.

This distinctive piece of New Market heritage awaits your vision to restore it to its original character while adapting it for modern living.

Don’t miss this opportunity to own a slice of local history and be part of its next chapter.

SOME INTERESTING HISTORY OF THE HOME:
Originally constructed between 1815 and 1820, the back portion of the home was built which was originally the front of the home. It was constructed as a simple brick home (the first brick house in the area) and consisted of just 2 rooms, a sleeping loft, a front & back porch, and a kitchen in the basement. The Minnis family acquired the house about 10 years later, who claimed to be one of the most prominent and wealthy families of Jefferson County. In 1840, the Minnises hired a carpenter from Williamsburg to add the 2-story “Georgia Wing” to the back of the original structure. The 4 new rooms became the front of the house and had Williamsburg style doorways and windows looking out toward the railroad. In 1860, the “Victorian Wing” was added to the home which added 6 new rooms, making the home a total of 12 rooms with 11 fireplaces. The tongue-and-groove floors and 11′ ceilings are pine (now textured). The walls were composed of a composition of clay, straw, and horse hair. After the Minnises built a new home, they rented the home in 1880 to George and Elizabeth Dempster, and their daughter Margaret. George ran the Minnis Family’s mill and Elizabeth turned the home into a hotel. Elizabeth had the architect of the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon design a Greek Revival style portico that was prefabricated and put together with pegs (no nails). The portico was delivered to the area via train and then hauled by oxcart to the home, where it was installed. The male and female guests, even husbands and wives, could not mix company and had to enter through separate doors on the portico in order to access their rooms that were on opposite side of the building. In addition, the Dempsters used a 3rd entrance that restricted guests from their private quarters located across the hall from one another behind the sitting rooms. Elizabeth also added an outside kitchen and pantry, as well as a pass-through window for serving food to be eaten in the dining hall. Servants were not allowed in the hotel. Also, a tub room was added downstairs and she designed a 3-story tin-lined water tower to supply the kitchen and pantry. The hotel closed in 1910 due to dwindled tourist passenger traffic resulting from the New Market train wreck that occurred in 1904. George and Elizabeth moved their family to Knoxville, where he founded his Dempster Dumpster business and became a millionaire.
